Invisalign® Attachments
Invisalign® has become one of the most preferred teeth straightening treatments because of the many benefits this technique provides. Invisalign uses a series of clear plastic aligners to gradually shift the teeth to achieve a straighter smile and properly aligned bite. Invisalign can correct many of the same malocclusion problems as braces, but it does so more comfortably and discreetly because there are no metal brackets or wires involved.
Sometimes for Invisalign to be a success, patients require Invisalign attachments. Invisalign attachments focus pressure to promote the success of Invisalign treatment. Many of Dr. Danny O’Keefe’s Flowood, MS, patients have questions when they hear they need Invisalign attachments. Here we answer some of those questions to give you a better understanding of how and why Invisalign attachments are used.
What Are Invisalign Attachments?
Invisalign attachments are small tooth-colored bumps, or “buttons,” that are bonded to the surface of the teeth using a dental compound. Attachments are strategically placed to act as anchor points for Invisalign aligners so that teeth receive the force that is needed to move properly.
When Are Attachments Needed?
Not all of our Flowood patients require Invisalign attachments. When malocclusion problems are minor or straightforward, Invisalign aligners alone should provide the pressure necessary to encourage movement.
When issues are more complex or when the teeth need to be moved in a certain way, attachments serve as anchor points that allow force to be directed appropriately. Invisalign attachments may be necessary if a tooth is rotated, angled or shaped a certain way, or needs to be brought above the gumline.
Do Attachments Stay In Place Throughout Invisalign Treatment?
Attachments are used differently in each situation because they are dependent on the patient’s unique needs. Often attachments are only in place for a portion of the Invisalign treatment timeline, but the more complex the malocclusion problems are, the longer attachments are likely to stay in place. In some cases, attachments remain on the teeth for the duration of Invisalign treatment.
Are Attachments Noticeable?
One of the greatest benefits of Invisalign treatment is the discreet appearance of the aligners. Invisalign is often called “invisible braces” because they blend in so seamlessly against the teeth. Since most of our Flowood patients choose Invisalign because of its subtle appearance, it is natural to worry if Invisalign attachments are noticeable.
Invisalign attachments are minimal in size, and they are made to match the color of the natural teeth as closely as possible. Because of this, they should not be noticeable. However, their visibility also has a lot to do with placement. If attachments are necessary on the front teeth, they are more likely to be seen than if attachments are placed on the side or back teeth.
Can I Still Remove My Aligners If I Have Attachments?
Invisalign attachments do not change any of the aspects of Invisalign treatment. Aligners can still be removed for eating, drinking, and brushing the teeth. The key thing for patients to realize is that attachments make aligners fit more securely and snugly, so they will not slip in and out very easily. Many people require practice to get used to inserting and removing aligners while attachments are in place.
