Root Canal Therapy By Danny O'Keefe D.D.S. on October 20, 2012

Jackson Root Canal TherapyIt is common for patients to experience some degree of tooth decay. When tooth decay is detected at a routine dental check-up, the problem can usually be addressed before it gets out of hand. However, if tooth decay goes untreated, the problem will grow and an infection can develop. When a root canal infection is present, Dr. Danny O’ Keefe, a respected Jackson cosmetic dentist, performs root canal therapy to eliminate infection and protect the tooth from further infection.

Symptoms of Root Canal Infection

Patients who are already experiencing other dental problems are likely to experience a root canal infection. Bacteria are able to enter a tooth more easily if it is cracked, chipped, or eroded. While it may not always be obvious an infection is present, there are signs that may indicate a problem. An infected tooth may cause pain, especially when pressure is applied. The gums surrounding the infected tooth may also be feel tender and may even become red and swollen. Other signs of infection include sensitivity to extreme temperatures and even a gray or yellow hue to the tooth. Dr. O’Keefe can examine your teeth to determine if root canal therapy is necessary.

Root Canal Therapy

If Dr. O’Keefe sees signs of root canal infection, root canal therapy will be performed to treat the infected tooth. The infected tooth will need to be cleaned out to eliminate the infection. We will first drill a small hole in the tooth so Dr. O’Keefe can remove the pulp, nerves and any debris to eliminate the infection. The entire tooth will be cleaned, inside and out, to get rid of all bacteria. When this cleaning process is complete, the tooth will need to be sealed. The tooth is sealed to prevent bacteria from entering the tooth and infecting the tooth again. The interior of the tooth will be filled with a compound material and a tooth-colored filling will be placed over the biting surface of the tooth. As a further layer of protection for the treated tooth, Dr. O’Keefe often recommends to his patients in Jackson dental crowns be placed over the tooth. This can protect the tooth to ensure that it stays strong and free from infection.

Recovery

It is common for patients to experience some degree of pain or sensitivity after undergoing root canal therapy. Pain medication can be used to alleviate these symptoms. You can also eat soft foods or avoid using the treated side of your mouth in order to prevent any additional discomfort. When your tooth has healed, it will be important to maintain a good oral hygiene routine. Proper upkeep will help you avoid another infection and keep your mouth in good health.
